A small gift does not need an occasion. It can be a present when you visit friends with children, a little comfort after a jab, or a surprise because a school report was good. Precisely because it is small, it can be very personal. A child quickly notices when someone has thought of them.
A card game takes up hardly any room and travels anywhere: to the waiting room, on the train or to Grandma's. Games with simple rules that are understood after a few minutes work well. Some are for two players, others for the whole family, so check the age label and the number of players.
A book is a gift that lasts. Board picture books suit the little ones, short read-aloud stories suit pre-schoolers, and thin early-reader books or puzzle books suit primary-school children. If you are unsure about interests, the parents are usually glad to help.
Drawing pads, pencils, stickers or small craft sets give a child something to do. They leave room for the child's own ideas and need little storage. Sets with everything in one tin or box are particularly handy.
Many sites sort small gifts for girls and for boys separately. In reality it depends on the individual child. A book about rockets and a jewellery craft set can both delight any child. Ask what the child is into at the moment.
A small gift works best when it fits the current favourite topic. If the child loves animals, an animal book or an animal card game fits. If they like building, a small construction set might please them. If they draw a lot, new pencils are a hit. Make a note of such hints on your next visit and you will always have an idea ready.
