Many five-year-olds love to tinker. They want to know how things work, build elaborate structures and keep stories going for days. Some already recognise letters and numbers and are proud of it, while others care mostly about movement and imagination. Both are normal. For many children, the year before school is also a time when they want to feel a bit grown-up. In Germany, children usually start school around age six, with a celebration called the Einschulung.
Children this age often know exactly what they like. That can be football and ballet at once, dinosaurs and unicorns, experiments and cuddly toys. When looking for a gift, ask about the current favourite topic rather than thinking about gender. A game or set on that theme usually beats a stereotype.
Five-year-olds love it when adults or older siblings try a new game with them. Especially with board games, puzzle books and experiment kits, it is worth playing the first rounds together and then letting go.
A day out the child plans themselves, a sleepover at the grandparents, a bike ride together or an afternoon at the library are gifts that cost nothing and are often remembered. A home-made puzzle booklet or a treasure map for the garden also goes down well.
One more practical thought: some five-year-olds are delighted by something they can look after themselves, such as a small plant to water, a magnifying glass for the garden or a notebook of their own. Gifts like these make a child feel taken seriously, and they pair well with any of the products below. For more complex sets, allow some time to try them out together.
