Wooden accessories for a play kitchen or shop, for acting out everyday life: cooking, selling, serving.
Many children develop a strong will of their own around two. They want to build towers, carry things from one place to another and copy grown-ups: cooking, phoning, looking after dolls or toy cars. At the same time, interests change quickly. A toy that was thrilling yesterday may lie in the corner today and come out again next week. That is normal and not a sign of a wrong gift.
Whether a child prefers diggers, soft toys, books or play kitchens has little to do with whether they are a girl or a boy. Ask yourself instead: what does this child do all day? A keen stacker will enjoy building blocks. A child who studies pictures and copies animal sounds may like books or simple audio stories. A child who is unstoppable outdoors would suit balls, spades or bubbles.
Many two-year-olds throw, bite and kick their toys, so sturdy materials and firm seams matter more than lots of features. Since children under three still put many things in their mouths, toys with small swallowable parts carry the warning that they are not suitable for children under 36 months. Read the manufacturer’s age rating carefully and choose the simpler model if in doubt. For toys with batteries, the compartment should be secured with a screw. Button cells must never be within a child’s reach.
At this age, the biggest gain comes when someone joins in. A gift that works for two, such as a puzzle with a few large pieces or a picture book with pointing pages, often stays interesting longer than something that blinks away on its own.
One more word on noise and space: some toys are loud or need room that not every home has. A glance at size and volume saves the parents trouble later. If in doubt, ask what fits at home, and choose something that is easy to put away. This matters especially when several relatives are bringing presents to the party.
