By seven, many children have got to know school life and are discovering what they really like. One collects stickers, another builds marble runs, a third devours books about animals. Among gifts for 7-year-olds, the ones that work are simply the ones that fit that particular child, and gender says little about that. A favourite subject says a great deal.
Many children this age read whole chapters alone for the first time and are proud of it. Books with short sections, pictures and a subject the child already loves invite them to carry on. Puzzles, mazes and brain teasers often appeal too, because they can be solved in small portions. Other children collect with great dedication, whether that is cards, stones, feathers or erasers. For them, a nice box or an album to sort things into is already a present.
Does the age recommendation fit? The manufacturer's age on the box is a guide. A game marked for 8 can work at 7 if someone explains the rules at the start.
Can the child use it alone and with others? A gift that can also be played with a parent, a sibling or a best friend tends to get played more often than one that is only fun on your own.
How much time is in it? A kit that fills a rainy afternoon is different from a game for a spare ten minutes. Both have a place, and it helps to think about what is missing right now.
Screen rules belong to the family, so ask the parents first. Books, games and craft supplies are often enough at seven.
One more thing to think about is storage. A game with many pieces needs a box, a book needs a shelf, a craft kit needs a table. The child will enjoy a gift for longer if they can start straight away. For a larger gift, such as a big building kit or a family game, relatives are welcome to chip in together if relatives agree it beforehand.
Not every gift needs wrapping. A film night with homemade popcorn, a bike ride with an ice cream at the end, a trip to a museum or a farm, a sleepover at grandma's: the child can redeem these vouchers and tell the story afterwards. Add a small gift from the selection on this page, and the voucher has something to hold.
