Why give party favours?

Party favours, also called party bag fillers, are small gifts that guests take home at the end of a party. They say thank you for coming and let the afternoon linger a little longer. They are not essential, but many families do it. That does not mean they need to be expensive or large: one or two well-chosen small things work better than a bag full of odds and ends.

Avoiding the plastic pile

Many ready-made sets contain items that are broken or forgotten after a day. When choosing, ask yourself whether you would be happy to take it home as a parent. Things that get used up or really used leave less waste than things that just lie around.

  • pencils, erasers or a small notepad
  • a mini card game or a dice game for travelling
  • a small tub of modelling clay or a craft set
  • seed packets to plant at home
  • something edible, if the parents are happy with it

Matching the party theme

Favours work best when they fit the theme of the party. At a pirate party it might be a mini telescope or a treasure map to colour in, at an art afternoon a small sketchbook with pencils. That way the gift becomes a keepsake of exactly this day.

Ready-made sets and parcels

If time is short, ready-made favour sets help. Check the contents, though. If there are small parts, they are not suitable for children under 36 months, so look at the age label if younger siblings are at the party. Ready-made sets contain many pieces, so take from them what suits your guests.

Fair for every child

When every child gets the same, there are usually fewer arguments. Pack a few spare bags in case someone turns up unexpectedly. And ask parents about allergies beforehand if anything edible is included.

Ideas by age of the guests

Pre-schoolers like stickers, small pads or wax crayons. School-age children enjoy card games, small puzzle booklets or notebooks. For mixed groups, simple items like pencils or modelling clay are easy choices that nobody minds. A paper bag, a small pouch or a card box is enough as wrapping.

Frequently asked questions

Do you have to give party favours at a children's birthday?
No, it is an optional gesture. Many children still enjoy a little something to take home.
What party favours can I give without plastic?
For example pencils, small pads, seed packets, paper craft sets or something edible. A card game made of cardboard also works well.
How much is enough for a party bag?
One to three small things are enough. What matters is that every child gets the same.
What should I watch for with favours for small siblings?
The age label. Toys with small parts that could be swallowed are not suitable for children under 36 months.
