Learn Shapes

Discover different shapes! Recognize circles, triangles, stars and much more.

Learn Shapes - Discover Geometric Forms Through Play

Learning shapes is a central building block of early childhood development. Geometric shapes are everywhere: in building blocks, on the playground, in nature, and in daily surroundings. Our free learning game on Wimolino helps children from age 3 learn shapes, name them, and recognize them in their environment. Through interactive exercises, spatial thinking is promoted and the foundation for later geometric understanding is laid.

Three Levels of Shape Learning

  • Basic Shapes: The four most important geometric shapes: circle, square, triangle, and rectangle. Children learn to recognize, name, and distinguish them.
  • Extended: The shape repertoire expands to 10 shapes, adding star, heart, oval, diamond, pentagon, and hexagon.
  • Find Shapes: Applied knowledge! Children must find specific shapes in a picture with various shapes, training visual perception and quick recognition.

Why Is Learning Shapes Important for Children?

Learning shapes promotes spatial thinking (key for math and science), mathematical foundations, classification skills, language development, and writing preparation. Children who confidently recognize shapes have an easier time in elementary school geometry.

When Do Children Learn Shapes?

Shape perception develops gradually: fitting shapes into sorting boxes (18 months), naming shapes with circles first (age 2-3), distinguishing all basic shapes (age 3-4), and recognizing shapes in various sizes, colors, and orientations (age 4-5).

Discovering Shapes in Everyday Life

Geometric shapes are everywhere! Windows are rectangles, plates are circles, roof gables are triangles. Use everyday situations for shape learning. All levels are free on Wimolino. Discover also Learn Colors and our other learning games.

Shape Learning FAQ

At what age can children start learning shapes?
Children can begin recognizing simple shapes like circles, squares, and triangles from about age 2-3. By age 3-4, basic shapes are reliably distinguished. From age 4-5, more complex shapes can be learned.
Which shapes should a child know before school?
Before school, a child should reliably recognize and name at least the four basic shapes: circle, square, triangle, and rectangle. Additional shapes like star, heart, and oval are a bonus.
How do children distinguish square from rectangle?
Explain it like this: a square has four equal sides, a rectangle has two long and two short sides. Show examples: a tile is often square, a door is rectangular.
Why is learning shapes important for school?
Shapes are the foundation of geometry, which is a core part of math education. Shape learning also trains spatial thinking important for science, technology, and art.
Is the shape learning game on Wimolino free?
Yes, all three levels are completely free and playable without registration. No ads during gameplay.
